The Volkswagen Passat is basically a passenger car, especially designed for family use. The name, Passat, was taken from a German word; which means Tradewind, just like other Volkswagens of that time. The introduction of the Volkswagen Passat was in 1973 and since then, there have been six new models in the market so far. The latest version is a coupe, named as Passat CC.
Sedan was in the top of the market when the Passat hit the market. During that time, other Volkswagen models, such as Type 3, 411 or 412 etc. failed to in the market to make a good sale. So the company wanted a new model. With collaboration with Audi, Volkswagen designed Passat with water cooled engine and front wheel drive in 1973. This was the first generation of Passat, which created a whole new market for Volkswagen.
The Volkswagen Passat Mk1 was the first model of Volkswagen Passat which was released in Europe in 1973. This version had sedan like design with both two and four doors. The designer of this model was Giorgetto Giugiaro. This model was very similar with the Audi 80 model which was released one year earlier. The engine was 1.6 L I4 maximum and the transmission was 4-speed manual. It had 46 L fuel capacity and it had front engine layout with front wheel drive. The production ended in 1981 in Europe and 1988 in Brazil.
The next model is Passat Mk2 which came to the market in 1981. This time Volkswagen used rectangular head light instead of round head lights. The outlook was little changed and it was slightly longer than the previous model. This four wheel drive model had an engine of maximum 2.2 L D and the transmission was 3-speed automatic and 4-speed and 5-speed manual. The North American version of this model was called Quantum. In Mexico, it was known as Corsar and Santana in Brazil.
The next model was Passat Mk3 which was started in 1988 in Europe and two years later in America. This model was different from the previous models in many ways, especially in the performance; although the design was still oldies. Even Used Volkswagen Passat used patrol engine with fuel injection, which made the Mk3 a better performer. The four wheel drive had 2.0 L 16 valve in the GL model engine and 1.8 L with CL model. In 1991, the new 2.8 L engine was introduced with VR6 engine in GLX and GLS models. This engine was capable of speed up to 224 kilometers per hour.
The Passat Mk4 was introduced in 1993 with some modification in the engine section. The award winning Passat Mk5 came to the market in 1996. The latest model is Volkswagen Mk6, which first came in 2005 and still available in the market. The Passat CC is the latest version in this model which was shown in the 2008 North American Auto Show.
